It’s back to the US of A this week for this year’s 2nd World Golf Championship – the Cadillac Championship at Doral’s TPC Blue Monster. The #teamCallaway line-up in a limited field of 65 includes Els, Mickelson, Furyk, Grace, Colsaerts, Jacobson and Noren. Here’s who our “experts” picked, out of the #TeamCallaway staff players taking part, to be in the mix on Sunday.
Dominic Warne (Senior Marketing Manager, EMEA)
Dom’s picks: Nicolas Colsaerts, Freddie Jacobson and Ernie Els
Tough to pick this week and no real stand outs in terms of current or course form. However, I’m going for gut feel over stats this week:
Pick #1: Nicolas Colsaerts
Distance is a big help on this course and this man has it in spades. He’s also a super putter so I’m hoping it all comes together this week now that he should be finding a rhythm after several weeks playing Stateside.
Pick #2: Freddie Jacobson
Looking at a bigger year, and so close at Riviera a few weeks back. I just feel his time is very close.
Pick #3: Ernie Els
Ernie’s there or thereabouts at the moment and a couple of shots off a big week. He’s done well at Doral and having just moved from the Razr Fit to the Razr Fit Xtreme, he’s making good noises about the changes he’s seen.
Elliott Platts (PR & Events – UK & Northern Europe)
Platts’ picks: Ernie Els, Branden Grace and Alex Noren.
Pick #1: Ernie Els
The Big Easy missed out on his trip to the famed Blue Monster course at Trump Doral last year, and in his opinion that was almost like missing the Masters. He is clearly raring to go and when he is top of his game he makes golf look effortless – which is what I think will happen this week!
Pick #2: Branden Grace
The South African had a sensational season on the European Tour last year and I think that he is finding some form. He had a very disappointing finish last week but on the plus side his Versa #1 Wide Putter was on fire in the opening round. He took just 25 putts to help him shoot 65 and if he can find this form on the greens he will have a great chance.
Pick #3: Alex Noren
The Swede is an extremely consistent performer on the European Tour so it will be interesting to see how he gets on in some PGA TOUR events. He missed the cut last week but I think he will be more settled and prepared for this week.
Mike Clark (Custom Fit Supervisor – Europe)
Mike’s picks: Nicolas Colsaerts, Phil Mickelson and Ernie Els.
Pick #1: Nicolas Colsaerts
The Belgian Bomber has the perfect game for the Blue Monster course. His length here is a real advantage & with a new Odyssey Tank putter in the bag I can see a real strong week for him.
Pick #2: Phil Mickelson
Another player with a game well suited to Doral I feel Phil could easily have another good finish this week. He is always aggressive & that can reap rewards on this course especially with the confidence he clearly got from switching to his RAZR Fit Xtreme driver.
Pick #3: Ernie Els
Always a solid performer at Doral so a pretty safe bet for a good finish there. So far Ernie’s 2013 season has been quite quiet by the Big Easy’s standards but this could be the week that get it going like it did in 2010.
Cameron de Buck (Digital Marketing & Social Media – Europe)
Cam’s picks: Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els and Jim Furyk.
Pick #1: Phil Mickelson
You never know what you’re going to get with ‘Phil the Thrill’, but if he drives it anything like he did in Phoenix with his new best friend, the RAZR Fit Xtreme, I might as well not even bother with my other two picks!
Pick #2: Ernie Els
Ernie, in his own words, is a bit too much up and down for his own liking, but he shaved a lot of cups last week. If he tightens his game and starts holing some putts, expect him to do well on a course that he’s won on twice in previous years, including the 2010 WGC CA Championship.
Pick #3: Jim Furyk
Jim had such a good year last year, even though he regards it as a year full of missed opportunities. But he’s in cracking form. If he’s in the mix on Sunday, hopefully he can hold it together on one of golf’s most fearsome finishing holes.
