Two recent winners of the Trilby Tour enjoyed a personal coaching session with David Leadbetter courtesy of tournament sponsors Callaway Golf.
Charlie Lidyard, who won the event in 2009, along with the 2010 champion Chris Dyson, were treated to a 90-minute lesson at Ham Manor Golf Club in West Sussex as part of their prize and benefitted from the coaching expertise of a man whose players have won no fewer than 12 Major Championships.
David – a member of Callaway’s Tour Advisory Staff – worked closely with both players, recording videos of their swing, analysing areas for improvement and setting practice drills to help ingrain the changes being made.
For both players it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. “Working with David was unbelievable,” said 21-year-old Charlie, who has now turned professional and is aiming to reach the European Tour. “The knowledge he has of the game is unreal. He gets his point across really well and is so easy to understand. We worked on strengthening my grip a little bit and setting the club early on the takeaway. The idea is to swing across my body to shallow out the angle and stop me from hitting it left.”
Chris, a seven-handicapper who plays out of Goodwood, was equally effusive. “When you think about the people he has coached and the success they’ve had you just have to listen. He’s got such a wealth of knowledge and experience and it was interesting how he would take pictures and then point out why to make a change and what the benefits would be to my swing.“
And to prove just how effective the session was, Chris proceeded to win his Club Championship just days after his lesson with Lead. And, of course, he was using a bag full of Callaway clubs, including the new RAZR Hawk driver!
