Callaway Staff Player Thomas Bjorn has capped an incredible 2011 season by being named Denmark’s Player of the Year. The veteran Dane won the title three consecutive times between 1995 and 1998 but this year enjoyed his most successful season ever and was a worthy winner of the accolade.
“I’m really happy to receive this award again,” said Bjorn. “2011 has been a great year for me and it’s lovely to get my name on this trophy once again.”
Bjorn made a flying start to the season by winning in Qatar after a bogey-free weekend. It was the first win for the new RAZR Hawk driver that would go on to record multiple victories in 2011.
Bjorn then contended at the Open Championship at Royal St George’s before enjoying a two-week purple patch that would define his year.
First he held his nerve to win a five-man play-off at Gleneagles and claim the Johnnie Walker Championship. Bjorn birdied the difficult 18th three times in succession, the culmination of which was a 7-iron to three feet that sealed the win.
But the best was yet to come as just a few days later in Switzerland, Bjorn fired a remarkable closing 62 at the Omega European Masters to turn a three-shot deficit into a four-stroke victory.
“The way I finished was special and it’s been an amazing two weeks,” said Bjorn, who was five-under for his last five holes. “At the end you think nothing can go wrong. Golf seems easy sometimes and you have to remember that when you are not playing well.”
With nine birdies and an eagle on the final day, he equalled the lowest round of his professional career. It also meant he was 31-under-par for his last eight rounds.
Soren Clemmensen, Chairman of the Danish Golf Union said: “It has been a fantastic comeback season for Thomas. He showed high class in the way he recorded the three tour wins.”
Bjorn finished the season 9th on the Race to Dubai and currently sits 16th on the Ryder Cup points list.
