With Thomas Bjorn leading after round one and a charging Phil Mickelson tied for the lead midway through the final round, it was a creditable performance at Sandwich from Callaway staffers chasing the Claret Jug.
Phil pulled out all the stops on the final day, going out in 30 and playing some of his best ever golf on his way to tie a T2nd finish. Phil had the option of the X-Tour U/18 driving iron that he used at the US Open, but decided instead on a 22º Proto hybrid built specially for him to use at Bethpage a couple of years ago. He came close, shooting the joint-lowest round of the day (a 68) but it wasn’t quite enough.
Bjorn – who qualified as sixth alternate – shot an opening 65 but eventually finished 4th at 1-under-par, while Fredrik Jacobson also performed well to finish T16th.
Odyssey on top again
One week after grabbing wins on the PGA, LPGA and European tours, Odyssey was the most used putter in the field at the Open. There were 52 Odysseys in play, exactly 1/3 of the field, with players from 17 different nations using 32 different models, 47 of which had an insert.
Driving irons and new wedges in demand
Tour reps say that players were requesting the U/18 and U/21 utility irons at the Open and also asking for special wedge grinds due to the tight lies at Royal St George’s.
Monday Night Media Event a success
Noren, Willett, Quiros, Jaidee and Jacobson all attended a media event at Prince’s GC on Monday, taking part in a long-drive contest, short game tests and nearest-to-the-pin challenge. Between them there were 3 different current product drivers, 3 different sets of forged irons, 4 different Odyssey putters and 2 different Tour balls in the bag.
