What a week it’s been for Callaway Staff Player Thomas Bjorn. Fresh from his gutsy play-off win at in the Johnnie Walker Championship, the Dane shot a magnificent closing 62 at the Omega European Masters to claim a four-stroke victory in Switzerland.
After rounds of 68-68-66, he began the final day three shots back but opened with a birdie and reeled off five more in six holes before picking up another shot on 14. The decisive blow, however, was the near-perfect 3-iron to 10 feet on the par-5 15th that set up an eagle. Closing birdies and 17 and 18 merely confirmed Bjorn as the champion.
“The way I finished was special and it’s been an amazing two weeks,” said Bjorn, who was five-under for his last five holes. “I started hitting my wedges so well last week and kept it going. At the end you think nothing can go wrong. Golf seems easy sometimes and you have to remember that when you are not playing well.”
Bjorn’s stats at Gleneagles were impressive enough last week, but his performance at Crans-sur-Sierre eclipsed even that. Using his RAZR Hawk Driver, Thomas led the field in Driving Accuracy for the week (82.7% of fairways hit) and also averaged more than 300 yards off the tee. Using his X-Prototype Irons, he led the field in Greens in Regulation, hitting more than 80%.
On the greens it was a similar story as Thomas finished 7th in Putts per GIR with his Odyssey Black Series putter. With nine birdies and an eagle on the final day, he equaled the lowest round of his professional career and is now 31-under-par for his last eight rounds.
A third win of the season lifts Thomas well into the Top-50 in the world rankings and up to seventh in the Race to Dubai standings. Having been a vice-captain at Celtic Manor in 2010, Bjorn also now leads the qualification for the 2012 Ryder Cup.
